These affectionate, smart, loyal family dogs are a combination of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Standard Poodle. They are Velcro dogs and love their people. The Standard Bernedoodle ranges significantly in size, from 45 to 110lbs on average. There are two different kinds: the F1 Standard Bernedoodle and the F1B Standard Bernedoodle. The F1 Standard Bernedoodle is 50% Bernese Mountain Dog and 50% Poodle.
The F1 Bernedoodle is the traditional Bernedoodle that many people think of when they hear the term “Bernedoodle”. However, F1 Bernedoodle genetics can vary a lot which will influence how they look. As an example, they can have coats that are flat and straight or curly. Curly or wavy coats imply that the Bernedoodle has more Poodle genetics and will be more nonshedding and hypoallergenic than a Bernedoodle with a flat or straight coat. In general curly equals Poodle and flat equal Bernese Mountain Dog.
F1 Bernedoodles gain one of the best genetic advantages that is called hybrid vigor. Hybrid vigor means the first cross between two purebred pets will be healthier than any parent purebred dog because they don’t inherit genetic deficiencies that are passed down from purebred dogs. Because Bernedoodles are a crossbred canine, they will only inherit hereditary diseases that are common to the Poodle and also Bernese Mountain Dog.
The F1B Standard Bernedoodle is a cross of a F1 Standard Bernedoodle and a Poodle, resulting in a 25% Bernese Mountain Dog and 75% Poodle mix. F1s enjoy a great balance of Mountain Dog and Poodle temperament; the F1B might lack some of the affectionate nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog, but is usually very intelligent and less likely to shed. F1 Standard Bernedoodles are usually very healthy and robust in nature, while F1B Standard Bernedoodles are more prone to congenital defects. The typically soft, wavy coats of Standard Bernedoodles are also highly varied in color, and can be solid (black, sable, silver, etc.), bi-color (any solid color plus white), or tri-colored (black, white, tan or sable, white, tan).
